When my sons were young, they learned very early that Mom was not big on buying the latest toy or letting them watch lots of television. They also learned that if they could convince Mom that something was educational, she was a real pushover. Fortunately, both of them grew up thinking that learning could be a lot of fun.
Now that both boys are grown and married, I realize how much I enjoyed trying to find ways to turn our playtime into educational time. Of course, everything is educational, it’s just that sometimes what the children are learning is not at all what we think we are teaching them!
Along with the many happy times spent with my own children and with other like-minded moms and their children, I’ve spent a lot of time volunteering in schools and church-school programs and have gotten some interesting ideas from them. I also find that the internet is an incredible source for creative ideas on teaching while playing. Most of the ideas here are not completely original, so I’ve tried to credit sources when I can. At the same time, it seems I rarely find an idea that I don’t decide to tweak a bit to make it more to my liking, and you’ll probably want to do a fair share of tweaking of your own.
I hope you’ll find something fun and useful here.
